I want to build a windows home server but I have no idea where to start on what to buy as far as hardware goes.

Uses: Used to backup four computers, store pictures, music, videos, and documents. Would like the auto backup feature. Be able to wirelessly backup, etc.

If it's not too much to ask for a system built at 1k 1.5k and 2k. Won't need monitor keyboard or mouse

$2,000 is overkill for a home server.

This is an area where the current crop of AMD processors would perform very well. They have excellent price/performance ratios and are geared towards server workloads.

The motherboards that are typically bundled with todays AMD processors (A10, etc) are also better suited for home server use.

I'll post an update later with some specs to consider, except it to cost perhaps half what you are thinking. :)

My test bench is actually an AMD setup, I bought it to configure the server software, learn it and get to know it more. Also I wanted to learn how to setup raid. I think its a A6 6400k and a gigabyte board I can't remember the exact model. Anyways 4gb 1600mhz ram. Onboard video.

and my friend was going to let me experiment with a raid card
