Our house was struck by lightning last night and while almost no damage was sustained (thankfully), my wife's computer no longer connects to the internet. We have double checked cables and everything, but once plugged into the router, there is no indicator light stating its plugged in. We've changed her cable with mine, since my comp is still connecting properly and still, no net, no indicator of being plugged in. Diagnostics say no network adapter found, its not in the device manager list and there is no unknown device listed either. Quite simply, the network adapter has disappeared. The comp is under warranty and we can trade it in, but she'd most likely be without a comp for close to a month. We also have no access to the bios since its password protected and we'll be calling for that password in the morning from the company we're buying it from. Any ideas or is returning it for repair under warranty our best option?

Solution
I assume this is a desktop? You could install a network card, either PCI or PCI-express. If you feel comfortable opening the case it's not difficult. Just make sure the unit is turned off and unplugged and ground yourself by touching an exposed metallic surface.

If you need to know which sort of card to get, post your PC model so we could look it up.
