I want to install a new SSD and operating system on an older computer that is with my folks. Rather than spend my trip installing all the software, I would like to load the SSD with the operating system and programs at home, then simply hot swap the bootable SSD drive for the one in the older computer.

The systems have different hardware.

Is this possible?

Possibly not. Setting up the windows, it will install basic drivers for your cpu, chipset, etc and if that is dramatically different from your parents, it will just blue screen. This is what we call in my shop a "motherboard migration", usually when a MB dies and we have to replace it with a different model or new MB/CPU if the MB is too old, and sometimes it will boot enough for you to get proper drivers in, sometimes it will just bluescreen. There is no way to know.

I would get a USB key ready with Windows on it, since it installs faster from a USB than DVD usually, then install the USB to SSD, should be rather fast and have Windows installed in about 10 mins. Find out there MB and other stuff beforehand and have all the...

Find out there MB and other stuff beforehand and have all the drivers all ready to install, and you could be done quickly. Learn to slipstream SP3 into Windows 7 so it doesn't have to do all those updates, and you could have it done fast. Setup remote connection, install the programs from home if you are trying to minimize time with them. lol.
