H80i Absurdly high temps

Hi, I'm having a problem with my h80i. The temps are REALLY high. (40-50 idle and up to mid 90s on full load) I read around and I fixed the backplate issue with some nylon washers (took 7 of them, one of the mounts was too short to fit the thumbscrew) and I still have high temps. I applied some aftermarket thermal paste to see if that would help but it didn't. Could my H80i be defective or am I getting false temp readings (unlikely but maybe)? I still have coverage on it until the end of this month (July 2013). I have an i7 2600k on an ASUS P8p67-M pro in a Silverstone Sugo SG09.

Then I don't understand what the washers are for, or why one of the screws wouldn't reach. The quick start guide I see online shows no use of washers when mounting the waterblock - only the fans and radiator mounting require washers.
I haven't actually used sealed-loop coolers, but I can think of some potential problems besides false readings:
1. improper mounting - I'm not familiar with the backplate issue you describe, but I can easily see how 7 nylon washers could cause uneven contact, given that the motherboard has 4 mounting holes for a cpu cooler.
2. pump failure - I don't know how to check this with a sealed-loop cooler, though.

I made 100% sure lol. That was one of the things I was worried about at first but I didn't screw that up.
