I've got a desktop that I built myself, that runs most games I play pretty well. I'm running these games on at 1440x900 monitor, but my laptop monitor is a 17 inch 1600x900. Is there a way I can hook up my laptop as a single monitor for my desktop? I know about maxivista, but I'd rather not pay. Is there any way that's free to do this? Preferably less than 50ms input lag. Also preferably over USB or Ethernet because my home network is kinda on the fritz.
My specs are:
3.4 GHz AMD Phenom II black edition
Gigabyte GTX 650 overclocked Version 2GB DDR5
8GB Corsair high performance RAM
420 WATT 12 Volt power supply

I don't know if it would work for direct3d games, but with a direct ethernet connection, RealVNC might do what you want (basically, you'd use your laptop to "remotely" control your desktop computer):
