So when I first bought this medialink USB wifi adapter, I had this issue where speedtest was giving me horrible dl and ul speeds. After much fiddling, I updated my firmware to my router and it increased to 7mbps dl.

It then hit me...I had the USB adapter sitting right next to a bluetooth adapter (interference). So I put the wifi USB into the dock it came with and propped it up on my desk and voila, 34mbps.

That was yesterday. Today I boot up and start downloading games on steam as usual. Not only was the dl speed horrible, but it started lagging me in ventrilo when I was talking to my buddy. Browser surfing slowed to a crawl. All remedied when I stopped dling, which was at about 100kbps. Speedtest told me I had been reduced to 1mbps. I tried doing a release and renew to fix the problem, but to no avail.

I started looking at my wifi status speed, and it sits at a consistent 65mbps. I'd start dling, and it went down into the 20's and lagged me again. FINALLY, I decided to just disable my wifi on my computer and then enable it again....and this solved the problem..well kind of, it's at 24mbps but I'm not gonna complain about that since wifi speeds can be somewhat slightly finicky day to day. Can anyone explain to me why and how to avoid this in the future?

EDIT: Alright well it's official, every time I boot the computer it's stuck around 1-2mbps....and right after i do a quick disable/enable of adapter, it fixes it. Makes no sense to me. I just wish I understood why lol

first test it to use a cable and verify that your problem is indeed your wireless. You need to eliminate the ISP and your router/modem etc.

Wireless is almost a art to find the reason stuff is slow. I would try to use other drivers for both the pc and router. You never really know sometime a older driver will work better. When you are as close (ie less than a foot) as you are interference is very unlikely, it would be much more likely you have defective equipment someplace.

Im on a channel that nobody else is on. The only remote possible interferences between me and the router would be the TV in the living room that's adjacent to the router. The modem is inches away from the router...I've heard that can do things possibly. There's nothing extreme here though that I can see messing it up, and then a simple disable/enable of the wireless connection fixes it. I'm not sure why an ip release and renew wouldn't work, but disable/enable did. It's doing the same thing...
