Gents:

Running Xeon.1240/MSI-gd55 under Ubuntu_12.04.xLTS and MATE_1.6.

Ubuntu **update manager** informs me a raft of update files await. These included Ubuntu-provided MATE_1.6 updates, but then it refuses to allow many (most??) of the updates to be installed claiming in an error-box ('...unauthenticated updates cannot be installed...') or suchlike.

There's lots of obscure error-text from download manager telling what I may/may-not do ... and by the end of it I'm not at all sure what got newly installed and what did not. Perhaps Ubuntu is complaining I did not previously use **their** version of MATE ( didn't exist) ... which in-fact I indeed did not!!!

How do I stop this obscure Ubuntu update foolishness and download (I guess) everything ! ?

Ms AMD_Gurl:

Given my meager admin talents I am trying to maximize system stability. Months ago choosing an OS for my workstation I judged UBUNTU more stable than MINT. Thus I have been trying to work with UBUNTU as my base-system. Of-course UNITY GUI is beyond repair; of-course Canonical demonstrates less/far.less interest in desktop systems and indeed in *nix.

Simple me ... no squintsville finger_swiping meme for me! I want a Gnome-2-like menu driven GUI meant for the BIG-SCREEN and MATE supplies just that. Consequently my current **mix** of UBUNTU and MATE_1.6 ... and the conflict between them. So you can see how I'm trying to manage between Canonicals greater resources and MATES better ideas. Push=shove I can switch my workstation to MINT w/o any excessive cost. Still waiting for APACHE to release OO_4 at which point switching OS starts to be a pain.

My reasoning being, is that MATE is made by the same developers as Mint. It's Mint's default desktop.

As such, it would likely be more stable than grafting on MATE to Ubuntu.

With that said I would assume you just have an issue with your MATE repos.

What's my best move now? In your judgement, should I use UBUNTU SYNAPTIC to remove the listed MATE packages and then re-install them all thru SYNAPTIC ? **BTW** do I need to worry about the content of my "source-file"?

This is what happens when you do an end run around your distribution's package manager. Remove all software that wasn't installed via said package manager and reinstall the proper way.

In my defence ... at the time I initially installed MATE did not appear in UBUNTU SYNAPTIC package manager. My installation required an **apt-get-xxx** piece of juju.

It's different now ... and for that matter strange. In SYNAPTIC, MATE_1.6 components are listed as installed !! I honestly don't know what to make of it ... how did SYNAPTIC discover I had downloaded files not accessible from its own cuddly-room?

Anyrate I have a "bad feeling" about who-allows-what and that somehow I've crossed-wires(?) and am about to pay for it. I do get the message ... (try) using SYNAPTIC to remove the listed MATE packages and then re-install them thru SYNAPTIC.

You are SO right. I've been trying to clean away the debre-field from MATE_1.6 within UBUNTU_12.04 ... and it's dammed near impossible! Like an infection of flesh-eating bugs -- MATE fyles are scattered everywhere; I gave up! Instead ... since this cluster-f**** is on my test work-station ...

Just DLoaded & burned MINT_15. Will try install as soon as I can brew a new pot of coffee & N. Florida storms blow out to sea. Damme how I wish AMD_Gurls fav SL had been more friendly to casual Linux Lusrs.
