VLC media player not working properly

So, for some reason. I can't view my videos properly in VLC media player. I used to record a lot of footage, and I could view it perfect but for some reason, when I view it; it's all multicolored as shown in the picture below.

I have uninstalled it and installed it, and that hasn't made a change either.

I'd start by reinstalling VLC then take it from there and possibly reset the video functions in your graphics software to default settings also.

do you have a codec pack installed?

i had k-lite codec pack installed and it caused problems like that with my vlc player when one of the codecs corrupted

+1 K-Lite mega codec pack, I dumped VLC an dnow play everthing via the included media player home cinema.

Not an answer, but also same issue of sorts. Usually I can click on ANY type video file an it plays. But lately, after an update, I click on files and nothing happens. I get a little "spinning icon" and then it disappears.
If I open up the player itself, then go to file/open and choose a file, it will work, but that is a real hassle! I want to still be able to click on a file for it to open. Also, I notice that if I reboot the computer, it will work as before, but it eventually will act up again.
