So I just saw the new Consumer release Windows 8.1 preview. So I'm deciding to upgrade my Windows 8 laptop to this. First of all, my laptop specs are:

Intel i3-3110M 2.4GHz Dual Core
6GB RAM
750GB HDD
Intel HD 4000

So I have a couple of questions which are...

1. If I install this, will everything off my computer get wiped? Will I have to redownload Steam and TF2 and everything?
2. I bought and have Start8 installed. What will happen to it if I upgrade? Will I have to uninstall it beforehand?
3. Will all my personal settings be gone? Will I have to redo them?
4. Will I have to reinstall drivers?

These are my questions. Thanks in advance! I really appreciate the help

Solution
I can't give you exact answers as all PC builds are different.

1) I upgraded my desktop to Windows 8.1 and there is the option to wipe but it is not necessary, which I didn't. weirdly enough I noticed my Avast free antivirus had been uninstalled as part of the upgrade.

2) I can't say anything about start8. As you're playing around with new tech and features try using it without the start menu. it'll take a week or two but IMHO I prefer the start screen as it's easier to see and group programs, so maybe you'll change your opinion and accept it if you spend enough time with it.

3) same answer as 1. you don't have to wipe anything

4) I had to install my Nvidia GeForce graphics drivers as I couldn't load BF3 with the older drivers when...

If this is your primary/only machine, I'd think twice. This preview will run out, probably in the fall, when the final release comes out. And you'll probably have to reinstall again. With no guarantees of your current stuff staying.

This is not an 'update', but rather a full install. Some stuff carries over, but as said, every PC is different.

I installed it last weekend on a spare laptop, writing over the Win 8 partition. But as partially to your question:
My Eclipse install carried over (but not the Java install it needs), as well as a folder I have for my FireFox start page icons. And of course Windows.old.

So far, haven't seen any 'must haves' over 8 Pro.

Thanks so much for the answers! It really has helped and decided that I'm gonna wait a while until I really decide to install it or not. Thanks so much for clearly answering my questions!

And if you do:
Windows 8 gave the option up front of installing with a Windows Live account, or a local account. I just use a local account.

8.1 seemed to demand a Windows Live account. However, if you make up a known bad email address and password, it will then ask if you want to create a local account instead.
