So I have the following system (Pure gaming rig), I believe the root of the issue is the mobo so I posted this under motherboard and the overclock forum. I am really hoping someone can help as I just wasted a few hundred dollars cracking open my 3770k, upgrading from an 2600k :

OS: Windows 7 Ult.
CPU: Intel I7 3770k, (OC4.2)
Cooler: Corsair H60, with push/pull
MB: MSI P67-GD80 (B3)
GPU: EVGA GTX 690
RAM: 16 GB G. Skills Ripjaw DDR3 1600
HD: Corsair Force SSD 3 120 GB
PS: 850watt something, can’t remember

So for some reason I can’t seem to overclock past 4.2, even at 4.2 prime 95 crashes with a blue screen instantly when running the torture test. I have all the latest updates drivers, bios, etc. At idle my temps are core 1=37-41, 2=37-39, 3=36-39, 4=37-39. Coretemp says my VID is 1.2510 CPU z says my core voltage is 1.136. If I move the multiplier in my bios past 42 then it won’t even load windows. I can’t imagine it’s a heat issue, this was my first time applying shin etsu as a thermal paste and was really thick, but nothing seems to running hot. My goal is get to 4.6 but it’s not looking so good. Also I just swapped out my mobo as my last one wouldn't even let me in the bios. When I got the new one I also upgraded my CPU to the 3770k. Thanks for anything help you can provide.

Yes I have the latest bios 11.2 I beleive. Not sure of the exact ram, I will check out the packaging when I get home as I know I saved it. I do beleive however it was two seperate packages with two sticks of 4gig ram in each.

Update:
I looked up my order history on newegg it was
2 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

That may it if two packages, NEVER a good Idea to mix sets - and like here, even if the same exact model, should be able to get then to play however....main problem is XMP is programmed by the package and a package of 4 has different requirements than a package of 2, people do this all the time to save a few dollars and are told on forums (like here at Tom's - "Yeah that's no problem, just get two sets......or....yeah you can just add sticks") this very BAD info by all the self appointed experts

I read about the suggestions to by a 16 gig kit that after the fact, its not a big deal for me to get some new ram. But how is this going effect the overclock of the CPU, I didnt even mess with the ram settings or turn on XMP. If this is the issue can I test if it will work by only using 8 gigs at a time and try to overlock the cpu then?

Like I said people do this all the time (drives me crazy) - , should have no effect on OC ability, I'm an Admin (volunteer) over on GSkill's forums and have prob help 2,000+ that have tried this (mixing) and generally I get them running fine, we should be able to also ;) I'll be around, in and out this evening

I'm sorry im am very confused, so are you saying the ram could or could not be causing my issues with overclocking my cpu?

Okay, I am home now and in front of my PC what do you think I should do? I have gone ahead and enabled xmp and it seems to be working ok, how do I confirm it running at optimal settings. Also right now my overclock is at 4.1, which is they highest I can have it at that prime 95 will even run.

Module Size 4096 MB
Max Bandwidth PC3-12800 (800MHZ)
Manu. G. Skill
Part # F3-12800CL9-4GBRL
SPD Ext. XMP 1.2

Its the same for every slot 1-4

Ok, you have the Ripjaws, let's set them manually to freq 1600, base timings 9-9-9-25, CR to 2t or 2N, DRAM voltage 1.55, take VCCIO voltage to 1.14, take VCCSA to 1.1 and try that, if it boots OK and appears stable, then try taking your OC to 4.4 and will want to raise your vCore (CPU voltage) up a bit, maybe + 0.04 initially

So I was able to take it to 4.4 with a voltage of 1.240. It seems to be stable as I am able to run prime 95, however during the first run of tests I get temps of 63-67 by the third run I am seeing temps as high as 85-87. I am scared to go any higher. I have ordered some new fans as I broke one of my case fans, so I decided to upgrade my pushpull fans on the h50, im going from a 1300 rpm 59cfm to a 1800 rpm 82 cfm. Hopefully that will help with temps. Unless you thinks its the thermal paste as I have been concerned about as well. Thanks for your help.
