Fried Intel g850?

Hey Community!

I was on here a few days ago, thinking my g850 was bottle-necking my hd 7750. While I don't think it is, I am still upgrading to a Intel I5 3570.

Anywhosal, I am playing Battlefield 3 right? (Strictly 32 player or less matches do to the Dual Core CPU)

So, I get constant 55-70 fps, occasionally I go on 10 second spurts of 48-55, but never less than 45 fps.

Every minute or so, It drops to 30-38 fps, seldom below 30 though.

This is quite choppy in comparison with my crazy high frames from before.

I may be imagining this, in an attempt to rationalize the occurrence. But do you think its when there is a large explosion, or series of explosions my cpu must calculate, thus dropping my fps? As in I've hit my CPU cap?

Another thing is, when i initially built this system back in October. From October-January of '13 my CPU heat sink, I had accidentally twisted the CPU heat sink's holders, so that it was about to fall off. Although it was definitely sufficiently on the motherboard, the heat sink could come off entirely would a good tug.

So do you think I fried it, or simply the CPU is being pushed too hard?

(I also notice sometimes every 50-70 seconds, my clock drops from 2900mhz to ~1680 mhz.)

My temps never go above 54C

Thanks,

Godbless.

  1. So two days, page 4, no responses. What are the rules on bumping?
  2. I would open up the case and clean and reinstall the stock cpu cooler. Now you say you twisted the cpu heatsink holders. Did you reset them so they'll hold the heatsink correctly?
  3. Yes, I did. Late january, when I built my brothers 7870/i5 build, I realized I did it wrong. I went into oh crap mode, then proceeded to fix it. If I had some thermal paste I would reinstall/clean.

Also, do you think the thermal paste dried, and isn't cooling correctly? My only thoughts on that would be why doesn't the temp go above 52 ever...

    Thanks for the response man.

Have you disabled all the power saving features in the bios and set "Maximum performance" power setting in windows?
  5. Yeah, I don't know what the bottleneck is. (64P)

    I just finished 1:10 of bf3 @ 720 and 1080p

    720P

    Min 28

    Max 78

    AVG: 55

    1080P

    Min 27

    Max 65

    Avg 45

See, its generally good frame rates...

Just, I get these 20 second spurts of ~25 fps... What the f is going on...

    Specs HD 7750 1GB oc'd ~15%, G850, 8GB Ram, Win7, 450w psu

Are they on full 64 player servers or when the action and explosions are present? Sounds like you're simply running out of Vram at 1080P
  7. Yeah, that was the main point of that post... >.< Those are on 64 player servers...

This is what is fricking with my brain, those are basically the EXACT SAME frame rates on 32 player servers... WTF is the bottleneck?

Its the Vram that sthe problem. What settings are you playing on?
  9. Low across the board, Ultra Textures, and Med Terrain stuff. (Decor, and density those three terrain options)

I mean... its a gig of vram...

Simply not enough GPU horsepower and Vram. For BF3 the more Vram the better.
  11. Okay... Well I mean, its freaking low settings... And why the 25 fps choke moments... That doesnt seem normal, if it was going to be that slow it would all the time, and if it was going to be 45-55 fps it would all the time... (Aside from explosions)

Okay, well if its not a cpu bottleneck, if you had 220$ to blow, would it be more beneficial to buy a 6870? or would a g850 bottleneck that?

(See, I am wondering what will bring me the biggest fps boost... As I only get 200$ to blow on parts like every six+ months)

Have you tried overclocking the card? Especially the memory. It might help alittle
  13. Yes, I oc memmory to like 1250mhz, and core to 900mhz (Review my edit to my previous post)

For your next upgrade i suggest a better GPU. 650 Ti Boost or 660 would be ideal.
  15. Okay, so you're telling me essentially regardless of brand name/gpu model, A gtx 660 or amd equivalent, will boost my performance more than an I5.

Also, your telling me the 6870 will not bottle neck it ? :D

6850 is right around the performance you have now. Again its a 1GB 6850 right
  17. I was referring to a 6870, since you confirmed and said 660 ti, the ti is on par with the 6870. (Both were 2gb models) The 660 ti was 200$ the 6870 is 210$ and the 6850 is 150$ on amazon.

    (I have a 7750 right now...)

660 Ti is on par with the 7950. 6870 is slower then the 560 Ti

  19. I feel like a class A idiot now, I meant to say 7870.. LOL and anyways, 80% 92% close enough, because as I said, this next generation is going to be ruled by AMD. (Next gen consoles)

But, if I get a 7870/660 TI will I get bottlenecked by my G850 y/n? Also, Does it look like I fried my CPU y/n? (I will close the thread as soon as those two questions are answered...)

Thanks for all the information man, godbless.

Your dual core is fine for a 7870/660 ti and no i dont think you even came close to frying your cpu
  21. Oh, shoot one last thing bro. Will I get higher frames with this gpu upgrade, than I would with a intel? Thanks again, this next one ill give you the best answer... LOL

Your 960T with its 6 Cores would be perfectly fine
  23. Thats a separate build... The question pertained to the hypothetical build we were discussing.

What is your gou usage now with the 7750?
