Video Problems With a New PC

I just bought a new computer form iBuyPower last week. It arrived Tuesday. I set the computer up that night, installed Windows, drivers, and a couple of games. By the next morning it was running nicely. Note that at this time I was using the most current NVidia drivers.

My wife and I used the computer for several hours Wednesday night and again for several hours today. It was fantastic.

My wife had left a game at the entry screen and walked away. I looked up and the graphics were crazy; a mass of weird polygons. I quit the game and found that the desktop exhibited strange behavior as well; polygons jutting across the screen; strange blue dots appearing in the background; unreadable text. This occurs in all programs I've tried, from 3d games to chrome to IE.

I tried the following:

  • I rebooted the computer. The issue was still there.
I turned off the computer, waited several minutes, and restarted. No change.
I opened up the case and ensured the power cord was connected to the card and that the card appeared seated correctly.
I removed the display adapter device and re installed the newest drivers.
I removed the display adapter device and installed the drivers that came on the EVGA disk. Neither driver change helped in the end, but note below when the problem was working.

These visual distortions DO NOT appear in the following cases:

  • With the video driver removed, the screen looks normal (though of course the resolution is low and no 3D)
In all cases, the Windows login screen looks fine. It is only once I log in to the desktop that the problems appear.

Having only had the computer a couple of days, this is upsetting. Any help is appreciated, and you have my thanks in advance.

Tech support appears to be down for the holiday.
