Hi all,

I've just built the following rig:

Intel Core i5-4670K (OC to 4.7 Ghz)
Corsair H100i
Asus Z87-PRO ATX
Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB 1600
EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB
SeaSonic 660W 80 PLUS Platinum

I'm trying to play S.T.E.P. Modded Skyrim and I'm getting Incredibly low FPS down to 12 FPS atop dragonsreach!!

It's immensely disappointing, I play at 1680 x 1050, I thought this rig would eat up this game no problem.

I'm running on 320.49 Nvidia drivers.

Anybody has any suggestions?

Some of those Skyrim mods really murder framerate, try a clean, unmodded install and see if the problem persists, if it doesn't, you know its the mods screwing it up.

Also get a better monitor, with a system like that you aren't doing it justice on a monitor like that.

That's really beside the point if he can't reach the FPS he wants? As said you will have to run a clean version of Skyrim and see if your fps is normal? If they are it's just another poorly optimised mod for Skyrim.

I know my monitor is really crappy for my system, I am planning to upgrade to a 24' IPS probably an Asus PA248 in two weeks. I'm just waiting for my wallet to recover from the $1000 I spent upgrading my rig, if I spend another $300 on a monitor today my girlfriend will prolly lock me out of the house lol.

Anyhow.. yeah I'm going to follow your advice and test the game on a clean install first and see what FPS I'm getting.

Another thing I found weird is that I ran EVGA Precision software while playing the game and the card which is clocked at 324 in Idle didn't even reach 700 while gaming and only heated up to 40 C. I have a temp target of 85 and the setting to reach 60 FPS checked. It seems like it should be breaking a sweat to reach 60 FPS but apparently its not even trying. Maybe I'm doing something wrong in the software..

That is kind of weird. Maybe you should also try to do a fresh installation of the drivers by using driver sweeper? I'm guessing you're GPU isn't running at 99-100% while gaming then?

This setting changed?

If its not going above low clocks that is your issue, but pushing a resolution as low as what you are I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't need to clock itself up. Try restarting the system and reinstalling the drivers being sure to select 'clean install', its a common issue with Nvidia's silly GPU boost system where the card wont clock up properly.

So I uninstalled the drivers and installed them back with the "Clean Install" option. I also reverted the game to vanilla state and used the EVGA Precision X Software to measure the FPS. I still got 18-20 FPS atop dragonsreach and the GPU never went over 50%.

I guess the only thing left to do is re-install windows, I didn't do it when I upgraded my rig.

yeah, sometimes a clean install will magically fix everything. It's almost a must-do if you are upgrading motherboard platforms, and a definite must-do if you upgraded from another manufacturer. Oh, and another thing, if you installed any lucit virtu/mvp software, uninstall it, it will cause these issues.

I re-installed Windows 8 and ran the game again, this time I got:

Frames: 135 - Time: 2266ms - Avg: 59.576 - Min: 58 - Max: 61

When I used Project ENB with Climates of Tamriel i got:

Frames: 205 - Time: 3563ms - Avg: 57.536 - Min: 56 - Max: 59

Windows 8 Clean Install FTW

I guess either my mods or on Win config were messing my system up.

Another thing, I've read that the 320.49 drivers suck and I should use 314.22 with a modified INF. I've just switched from an ATI Radeon so I have no clue how to do this or if I should. Any suggestions?

I used the Asus Suite III 4-Way Optimization for the OC. It runs stress and stability tests by itself before settling on a OC frequency. It's really easy mode.
