What factors do I have to consider when replacing a hard drive?

I have a vpc cw1agg laptop. The hard drive of my laptop has a problem which made me replace it with a new one. My hard drive is a TOSHIBA MK3259GSXP 320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5 SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive. I decided to replace my hard drive with a 500GB hatd disk.
1-Is it possible to do this?
2-Do I have to buy the same hard drive (Toshiba)? for example seagate
3-What do I have to consider for buying a hard drive for my laptop?

The first thing - always get 7200 RPM hard drives. They're a lot faster.
As long as you can find a way to get all of your stuff onto the new hard drive, you should be able to replace your old one. You don't have to buy exactly the same type, all you have to do is make sure the new hard drive is compatible. What you want to search for is the right physical size, storage size, speed and type. You'll want to look for 7200 rpm SATA hard drives that have 500GB of storage and a 2.5 inch form factor.

You'll need a hard drive cloning kit/ software. Read around to find the best one for your needs, I'm not sure which one is the best.

Thanks a lot for your answer.
The only question which will be remained is that if there is any standard for the size of the hard drives? For example how can I be sure that the hard drive is going to be fitted in my laptop?
