Hey guys,

I have a Powercool 80Plus 950W PSU. Long story short, I tried to use the jumpstart test to see if it works, but the fan did not spin and instead there was just a type of whining/high pitched sound coming from the PSU.

I tried different wall sockets and power leads and still no difference.

Here's a link to a video so you guys can hear the sound too: http://youtu.be/gMfFmv9lutg

(It's quite loud, but i think my camera doesn't pick up the high freq sound too well).

Would really appreciate if anyone has any ideas to what's wrong. Can it be fixed? Is it worth being fixed? On the labelling it mentions its a 'switching' power supply.. Does that have any effect?

Would appreciate any help!

How old is the PSU? Is it still under warranty? If so, I'd suggest getting an RMA. I'd also suggest that you get a PSU from a quality name, Like Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, XFX, PCP&C, or Enermax. (even if the Powercool is under warranty).:ouch:
The PSU is the heart of your system, without it NOTHING works! A PSU is the one component that can destroy all of your other parts if it goes bad.:bounce: Never skimp on the PSU, it is false economy!

I think it's out of warranty. It's an ex-display model from a shop that recently closed. I had about 11, sold the others and kept this one as it was one of the best out of them all.

What's an RMA?

Return Merchandise Authorization -- Basically, You Request permission from the Manufacturer to return Bad equipment for warranty work. Without it, the Manufacturer will simply refuse your return.

Sounds like you are in the market for a new PSU, then.:D
I'd recommend one from Corsair, Seasonic, XFX, Antec, PCP&C, or Enermax; 80+certified, in the 750 watt range, to be on the safe side! I'd rather have too big a PSU than too small. What are your full system specs, to get a better match in PSU Watts.

Hi - as clark said above - we need your sys specs to advise on a good
PSU soltuion for your system.

Haha no build yet, was planning to keep this one to the side for later since it has a big fan and is 950W.

So I guess there's no choice but to bin this one?
