Hello everyone, I would like to ask some tips on how to set up RAID, a friend of mine told me to do it in my rig. But I don't know how. Thanks.

I am using 2 HDDs.
MoBo P8Z77-V.

Solution

in this case, don't do RAID, or buy a second 2TB WD green. raid is based on parity, so if you do it now, you'll only have 320GB of storage if you do RAID 0, or 160GB for Raid 1. not to mention the raid would not work well since the drives are so different

Here...

watch this video. So you can be informed on exactly what all raid types are 0, 1, 5, 1-0 (aka 10)

Very informative and easy to understand. I don't remember if Mr Messer explains how to set it up but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

My HDDs are not the same, 2TB WD Green and 160GB Hitachi HDD.

what exactly models are your harddrives? and if they're seagate, when did you buy them?

as for RAID, which type of RAID are you thinking of setting up, or which raid configuration did your friend suggest? with 2 drives, your options would be raid 0 or raid 1. I'm assuming your friend is suggesting raid 0 for extra performance. but know that if you do this, your data would be stripped between TWO harddrives, with neither drive containing a FULL COPY of your data. thus if either of the drives fail, you lose everything. as for RAID 1, both drives are mirrored, so you have TWO copies of your data, but you don't gain anything in performance, you just gain security at the expense of harddrive space.

for starters, BACK UP all your data to an external drive. raid would reformat all the drives so both of your current HDDs will be wiped clean.

In that case I would just use the 160 hdd as extra storage.

My friend mentioned to set RAID 1, yet I think I should have HDD's with the same capacity.

yes I agree, and it's not worth it to buy a 160GB HDD. so yeah, do Raid1 to protect your data when you're ready to buy another WD 2TB drive. also keep in mind that raid is extra data PROTECTION, it is NOT back up. so if you don't have a back up already, I would just buy a 2tb external drive, back up all your important data, and store that in a safe location :)
