I can't burn a cd/dvd.

Following the "How to Burn a CD or DVD in Windows 8 Step-by-step instructions, I don't experience Step 7. Instead "Insert disk" window appears. There is a blank CD in the drive.

  1. Is your hard drive even able to burn discs in the first place? Look for it on the label on the drive
  2. It worked great when I had Windows 7 installed. Since upgrading to Windows 8, I cannot burn any type of disc. The CD/DVD ROM drive shows up in Device Manager. It has the latest Driver. It's there in File Manager, too, under Devices with Removable Storage.
  3. Do you have any burner software installed????
  4. No, I don't have any burner application software installed. It wasn't necessary when I previously had Windows 7 installed.
  5. SR-71 Blackbird, some time ago, I went through your Step by Step Guide to Deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters Registry Values. Just for giggles, I verified they don't exist in the Registry. Device Manager shows the DVD/CD-Rom drive Device status is: "This device is working properly". I knew this to be true because I installed Canon Digital Photo Professional software from the disk yesterday.

It is only since upgrading to Windows 8 64-bit operating system that my problem of copying files to a blank DVD/CD disk began. The Send to DVD/CD ROM Drive option on the right mouse menu is missing.
  6. Have you tried different software.
  7. No, I haven't. I thought I would, eventually, only as a last resort. There is still a good part of me that believes that it isn't necessary to install DVD Authoring or CD/DVD Burning software (free or purchased), which is why I'm here, again, looking for a solution to my problem. Thank you for being helpful.

Had the same problem and i found that switching the sata cable to another slot (if you have another one free) fixed my problem. I know it's a little bit late, but I hope this can help.
  9. Benjamin, Thank you for your suggestion. I did try that idea. It didn't work for me. Besides an error at start-up when the BIOS couldn't locate the drive in SATA 0, the right-mouse click menu item (Send To CD/DVD ROM) is still missing. Device Manager reports that the drive is functioning properly. The Burn to Disc option on the File Manager Share tab is unavailable (greyed-out).
    Best regards,
    Rocky
