I downloaded the "Repair Fix-it" from Microsoft, ran it; it showed that the problem had been fixed ~ it has not! I continue to get an error message that a component of Windows is missing; update continues to try to install the same 3 updates every time I shut down ~ each time it fails. I have the 2 System recovery DVD's that came with my computer. I started up my computer with the first system recovery disc in the drive for to try to repair this issue. I get a message that this disc cannot be used to repair. My hope was that I would not have to wipe my computer and start all over again...that I could just repair that one component of Windows. Can anyone help me?

Yes Recovery Disks are not for Windows repair. You need a real Windows CD to do that.

Azn Cracker: I think you're wrong. Windows System Restore will keep your files and data. But not the Recovery Disks. The Recovery disks are basically an image of the hard disk at factory default, and pushing the image back erases all data.

MemawD6: You will need to provide more information, what update is failing to install? Did you make research about that specific update? It's fairly easy to find they all have a specific update number (for example, KB123456). Just Google the update number with the mention "fail to install" and I bet you will find a lot of information on it. Or just post it on this forum and we'll look it up for you.

yea that repair fix it thing cant do jack.

Try doing system restore to a point where the pc was working. If you do use the recovery disk, i think they keep all your documents and stuff but delete all your programs. At least that's what happened in a past experience.

One really weird fix for a similar problem I had was to open Windows Defender from the control panel, enable it (don't forget to temporarily disable any security software you might have running) and allow it to update. Once that was done, Windows Update started working again and then I disabled Windows Defender.

There are thousands of reasons why a Windows update cannot install, and that is just one of them unfortunately... It would be a lot simpler if he would post the specific update number so we would know exactly what we're talking about.

Well it might depend on the manufacturer, but with my old compaq computer, i got to keep all my documents.

But whatever happens, its probably a good idea to back up all important stuff and then do a fresh install

It was a simple solution that solved the problem on three different computers for different updates. I thought it was worth a shot.

I've done a lot Recovery these recent years including with Acer, Dell, Asus, HP, etc... And they're always destructive. Your old Compaq might have been an exception.

I am getting error code 80070490 after it tries to install these 3 updates.
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2839894)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2647753)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2726535)
Each time it fails. At one point I got a message that a component of Windows for updating was missing.

Thank you for your suggestion. I downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2013]. It finally installed "Success!" but my windows update will still not download the 3 updates. However, instead of the 80070490 error code, I am getting 80240016.

Thank you so much for your response. That address takes me to FixIt; I tried that and it is still not working. I found that I had two viruses that actually block Windows from accessing specific components with the OS. The three items that will not download through Windows update all relate to printer issues. I have had to contact tech support for my computer (I have extended warranty) and they are working on the issue for me. They said they will resolve this issue. I appreciate everyone's input. You all provide a wonderful service for people like me who truly try to learn more about computers and how to take care of them.
