For my new pc build, which, for the most part is completed, I have finalized the price at $704, however my friend has an old 500GB hard drive which he used the windows XP install disk from dell on. So if i got his hard drive (which he is willing to do) i could potentially save like $100 because i would not have to buy windows 7 home premium and i would only have to upgrade to it.

My question: is that OS linked to my friends motherboard? If it is not, would i just be able to buy a windows 7 upgrade disk to get the os i need (windows 7 home premium) or would i need to upgrade twice... (to vista, then to 7)?

Furthermore, my build is Here
(my budget is to not exceed ~$750 but i would like to keep it under 700 plz :bounce:)

depends.. if his version if OEM - then it is tied to his (the original) Mobo and so you cant use.
If its a full retail version of XP.. then as long as he gives you the licence (i.e. he has not got it in use on another machine.. or used it to qualify for an upgrade).. you can use it.
If you can use it.. then XP certainly qualifies as an upgrade OS.. so you can use Win7 upgrade version to get it to Win7.. you don't have to go via Vista.

All the above info is the correct picture in terms of licencing.. at a technical level - some of these restrictions may not apply.
