I'm debating on buying a Z77 board for my i7-2600k. I understand I will not be able to run PCI-E 3.0 cards with the 2600k...but my question is, is it worth it to invest in a Z77 if i'm looking to upgrade the CPU and cards within a year? Or will there be exponentially better hardware out at that time to just start over?

why? if you have a i7 2600K, it is NOT WORTH IT to upgrade to i7 3770k, the improvements is highly marginal, and if you overclock there's essentially no improvements at all. if you're waiting for next year for the full upgrade, just save your money and buy the Haswell refresh (if that's good).

if you need a motherboard now, get a used/refurbished, or super cheap z68 or p67 chipset. I recently got my ROG maximus IV extreme for $120, and the maximus IV extreme z68 can be had for $180 on amazon
