I'm debating on buying a Z77 board for my i7-2600k. I understand I will not be able to run PCI-E 3.0 cards with the 2600k...but my question is, is it worth it to invest in a Z77 if i'm looking to upgrade the CPU and cards within a year? Or will there be exponentially better hardware out at that time to just start over?

It isn't worth it. By the time you upgrade, socket 1155 will be long gone. The most you'll be able to upgrade to is a 3770k, which will be 2 generations behind by then. Upgrade everything when the time comes.

FYI the above is the real answer.

Unless you need something on the motherboard that your current chipset doesn't support (I'm assuming you have a 6 series chipset as already running a 2600k) you will, at best, see a 10% performance increase from a newer Mobo.

With an upgrade planned for in a year or two anyways, a haswell based CPU gains about 30% improvement (same clock speed) over a sandy bridge based part. Broadwell (next main release) will likely see another 10-15% gain. Thus save the ~$150 from a new mobo now and it will basically pay for the new mobo when you upgrade the CPU.
