This question might be stupid, but I'm noob when it comes to this so I need your help...

I've got a new GTX 770 soon to be installed on my motherboard. Due to my poor hardware configuration, I am now waiting for PSU to arrive, for my current PSU can't power my GPU.

Since my PSU should arrive any time now, I have opened my computer case, and noticed that onboard graphics heatsink on my Gigabyte G41MT-D3V is extremely hot. There's no actual sensor to tell temperature, but approximation that I measured shows that right after startup, it is already somewhere about 60-70 degrees Celsius, and after running for a while it 'nonchalantly' goes over 120 degrees (I can't measure anything above. It may as well be way higher)

It doesn't cause any performance issues whatsoever, but I'm worried about having that hot piece of metal sitting on motherboard. The way I see it, it's a disaster waiting to happen...

When I install GPU, will onboard graphics act as if it were never there, or will it maintain some functions?

The northbridge houses more than just the igpu and your temp assuming is amusing. The igpu will be disabled, it won't do anything, it'll be off. The function mcbride is talking about only refers to laptops with switchable graphics or if you are running lucid virtu.

When you install a discrete graphics card, USUALLY what happens is that when your doing basic 2-D things the discrete graphics card will essentially "turn off" to save power and just let the integrated graphics do all the work, when your playing games or doing 3-D work, vice versa will happen. There is no reason for your integrated graphics to be getting that hot though.
