Longevity of the Radeon 7850 and 7870

Solution

Good answer. Nobody knows the future so it's all guesswork. But the spending advice is solid. £300 / $400 is generally the best amount to spend for a card that will be powerful and last a while without being overpriced for the performance...

LOL - Love the sarcasm.

Who knows.. Rule of thumb is to get a new card every couple years. The more you invest in one, ie: 300 model vs 150 model, the longer it'll last.

the 7870 should be good at least another year, and the 7950 and 7970 will be longer yet. But how do we know? Were just guessing.

Thankfully we have to thank the consoles to hold back PC games therefore increasing the longevity of the video card. However PC exclusives that required high end cards, nothing we can do about that.

Probably gonna go with the 7850 because this build is a budget build so I think I am going to try to stretch its life span until maybe December of 2014 then upgrade. I don't mind waiting 6 months with a lower end card to save up a bit and capitalize on the Christmas and Black Friday sales.

Thanks for the advice but that's not gonna happen with my finances right now. I will be better in a year or so in terms of money so I can deal with a slightly below kid range card if need be.

There are three things that can happen.

1. It lasts as long as you deem it to play your games (usable lifetime)
2. You use it for many years and then it finally breaks (maximum lifetime)
3. You damage it through excessive overclocking or other means and it breaks before you expect it to. (Half-life)
