Sudden-onset Hardware Issues

Hi everyone,

Three days ago I turned off my desktop computer for the (not-stormy) night, and watched it shut down normally. When tried to turn it on the next day it would not turn on. I discovered the PSU (OCZ700MXSP) had for some reason gone bad, so I replaced it (with an OCZ600MXSP), which works fine, but I am still having issues. I tried to do some troubleshooting while waiting for the new PSU to arrive: I put my hard drive (WD Caviar Black 640, with Windows 7) in a different, very old computer, but I could not boot from it nor was it at all recognized when booting with the old computer's hard drive (with Windows Vista). Yikes :(

After I got the new PSU I tried using my hard drive in my computer but again it was completely unrecognized. I tried using the old computer's hard drive in my computer, and though it would start up (much more slowly than usual) and every other component seems to be functional (after I reset the CMOS), Windows does not detect any network connection. I've ruled out the network cable or modem being the issue.

I've.. reluctantly accepted the fact that I have lost all my data, but it seems strange that my hard drive, my PSU and the network adapter on my MB would all have been fried in one uneventful night -- or has my motherboard (A780GXH/128M) gone selectively bad? I have never had major issues with any part of my computer. All these different issues confuse me as to what the real problem/cause could be, and my searches for answers have not proven fruitful, hence this post.

I hope I have explained my problem clearly. I'd appreciate any help :)

Have a beautiful day.

I'm sorry, I must have been unclear. I meant to stress that it was not a stormy night. It was a quiet night, there was no storm. I can see a surge doing that kind of damage, if it managed to get past my surge protector, but it doesn't seem likely that a surge would just randomly.. happen. I don't know. :??:

It has been two weeks now since my HD(1) 'died'. I didn't bother to disconnect it from my computer after trying to get it to work just as a data drive to the old HD(2) I'm currently using. Things have been uneventful until I started up my computer this morning and suddenly I saw the WELCOME SCREEN OF MY DEAD HARD DRIVE(1)!! It booted up! I was able to access the other HD(2)'s data from it as well. I quickly backed up as many things as I could, but after about 20 minutes I tried to open a folder and I got a BSOD. Unfortunately I didn't catch the error message. Upon restarting I'm back to the old HD(2) I've been using for the past weeks.

Given this new information, I'm suddenly not so sure that the HD(1) is completely fried, but it still isn't recognized by this HD(2). We didn't have a particularly cold night.

I don't know whether my original post was incorrect, not adherent to guidelines, or just unclear, I'm sorry if it was. I would really appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

Have a nice day!
