Whats best for boosting a signal?

I'm about to get broadband put in, which I hear as very poor WIFI coverage. Since my house has fairly thick walls the signal will be even worse.

I was thinking of locating the router on the first floor of my house (house has 2 floors not including ground floor), then run cables up stairs to achieve the best signal for gaming.

Should I buy a WIFI booster?

Is there something I could plug an ethernet cable into so I could then plug more ethernet cables into to connect to more devices? (will this affect the signal a lot?)

Those two concepts have little to do with each other. WiFi coverage relies on the quality of the router, rather than 'broadband'.

You don't have to use the modem/router they let you rent. You can buy a much better router which may be acceptable for your particular house.

And wired from the router is very much the best option.

Range extenders are ok, but just can't match powerline tech, especially the Netgear 500 NANO series that act as wifi access points and also supply a single ethernet cable connection.

If your getting VM cable, put superhub in modem mode and use an Asus AC router on the 1st floor for maximum wifi coverage.
