So I just built my first pc and I went to plug it into my tv using a mini hdmi to hdmi adaptor on my EVGA 650 TI graphics card and of course nothing displays on screen. What have I done wrong?

Solution

Forgot to mention that my tv recognizes that my pc is plugged into the first hdmi port it's just that the "no signal" message continues to float around on screen.

Yes, but does the computer know you want it to output via the HDMI? Reach through the guide I linked to.

I have read that guide over and over and I haven't missed a thing. The same problem occurs. I am only trying to view the bios. I even tried plugging a dvi to hdmi adaptor into the motherboard and still no luck. If I tried connecting my pc to a monitor would that make a difference?

Try a regular monitor. If that doesn't work either you probably have a problem with your video card specifically. Connecting to a monitor should be without issue (though some monitors now have Video Input selections as well).

I tried a regular monitor and it does work but not out of the graphics card. I had to use a VGA cable from motherboard to monitor and I was able to pull up the bios. I tried to connect via hdmi and dvi from the graphics card to monitor and yet again no signal. It seems as though my graphics card is completely useless. What is wrong with it?

I can't tell you specifically what's wrong with it. However it would appear it is dead. If it's brand new I'd return it to the store and have them replace it. If not you'll probably need to start contacting the manufacturer about warranty.

Ok but one last question. The disc the graphics card came with. What is it used for? I just build this pc yesterday and I am new to a lot. Don't want to sound stupid. And by the way the fan is working on the card when my pc is turned on so is that a sign that the card does in fact work?

The disc is to install the software driver for the card. However, it should work without that (as you can't install drivers until the card is in first). Besides that you would want to download the current drivers online instead of using the old driver on the disc.

The fact that the fan on the video card runs confirms that the card is getting power from the motherboard. Speaking of which, that video card requires a 6pin PCI-E power connector from your power supply unit. Do you have that connected?

I am very glad that you brought up the 6pin PCI-E power connector! For some reason i forgot to plug that in! Stupid mistake on my part. Is that the reason the display won't show?

Impossible for it to work without that! :) Without enough juice coming in the video card simply can't do what it's designed for. Plug it in and see what happens. My guess is you'll get a picture finally.
