I need to know what the more robust line of business laptops are from Lenovo and Dell. My oldest daughter, who is now living on her own, needs a new one, and normally I would just steer her towards the cheapest consumer level laptop, typically in the mid $300 range (her current one is an Asus which as I recall cost around $359 a few years ago). However, I think she needs one a bit more sturdy, and I'd like to help her get one that will last a long time, too. Can anyone help me with the model lines in Dell and Lenovo that are at least one notch above the cheapest consumer laptops? Thanks.

Solution
I'd have trouble with "robust" and $359 in the same sentence.

Be aware that neither Lenovo nor Dell actually "make" laptops. Asus and MSI do.

The vast majority of laptops on the market (94% in 2011) are manufactured by a small handful of Taiwan-based Original Design Manufacturers (ODM), although their production bases are located mostly in mainland China. Major relationships include:

Quanta sells to (among others) HP, Lenovo, Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Sony, Fujitsu and NEC
Compal sells to (among others) Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and HP/Compaq
Wistron (former manufacturing & design division of Acer) sells to Dell, Acer, Lenovo and HP
Inventec sells to Toshiba, HP and Lenovo
Pegatron sells to Asus, Toshiba...

I wouldn't put anyone in a lappie for school or work under $800-900

I'm aware that $359 is not robust. That's the entire purpose of my question: What lines ARE the robust ones? I also understand that there are about five or so actual manufactures of laptops. I also know that these manufacturers will build to the specifications of the major retailers like HP and Dell, among others.

I was hoping someone could tell me that, for instance, the Latitude line from Dell is more sturdy than the Inspiron line, which is better built than the Vostro line.

I think I found what I needed for Dell, from their website:
Latitude: Professional class laptops [says to me "better built, better build quality"]
Inspiron: Budget-friendly laptops [says to me "cheap, inexpensive, lower build quality"]

Now I just need similar info for Lenovo, and any confirmation anyone has that Dell's explanation and my interpretation of it are accurate.
