I bought my current GPU, a 128-bit GT 430 700Mhz 1GB DDR3, 1 year ago on eBay for $40. It has served me well, but now since I am getting into After Effects more, I am thinking about upgrading. My system is well-suited for video editing (i7 2600, 16GB RAM, 1TB SATA III HDD, and a 750W Bronze-Certified PSU. (if you think perhaps a SSD would serve me better than a new GPU, please let me know). My price range is about $150, but I will buy on eBay so hopefully I can save a few bucks. I don't plan on overclocking, and I want something somewhat small if possible.

My main two considerations right now is the GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB and the HD 7770 1GB. The 560 is $125 and the 7770 is $90. Also, I am looking at the GT 650 Ti 1GB (however, it costs the same as the 560 and apparently the 560 is quite a bit faster).

What would you guys recommend? Also, maybe I should get a SSD instead of a new GPU?

get a new GPU instead of an SSD. loading times and access to the drives are the only improvement and SSD can give you in your case. a GPU should be the priority as you have a very capable system. get the GTX 650 ti as it is more powerful than the GTX 7770. an NVIDIA card will suit you well instead of AMD because of its CUDA cores.

and by the way, a gtx 650 ti is better than a gtx 560 because of its newer architecture

I am not sure. What exactly do you mean?

If you are using software that accellerates video operations on the GPU, does it support CUDA or openCL?

CUDA is a nVidia proprietary technology that does not work on AMD cards
OpenGL is an open standard that works on AMD and NVidia cards but runs significantly faster on AMD cards.

Thanks for the help. I actually found out that the program (after effects), supports CUDA, so what would be a good choice then?
