win xp starts to boot the blue error screen

win xp wont boot. error says hive file missing or corrupt. is the hard drive bad, or cmos battery bad because it doesnt keep system time. i have compaq presario, and the cdrom drive doesnt work. or usb. any ides would be appriciated, thank you

The CMOS battery is almost certainly flat but a Registry hive can become corrupted by malware and that's completely curable. What is the message on the blue screen> Post back the numeric 0x0000?? and ANY_WORDS_JOINED_UP by underscores.
