Nvidia GeForce GT 640M - Low FPS in Games!

Hello,

I purchased an Acer V3-571G at the end of May this year, and i have been using it constantly ever since i received it to play games such as Live For Speed. Up until today i thought my games graphics were being processed by the Nvidia GeForce GT 640M graphics card, but it turns out the laptop has been using the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics instead. This came to my attention after installing a GPU monitor and noticing that the graphics card wasn't functioning during gameplay. I went into the Nvidia Control Panel and changed the preferred graphics device from 'Auto' (Integrated) to the Nvidia 640M, but now my FPS has dropped to almost half what it was when using the Intel HD 4000!

In Live For Speed i was getting around 70-120 FPS using the integrated graphics, however when using the dedicated Nvidia 640M i only get about 40-70 FPS.

The processor is a Intel i7-3610QM.
RAM is 8GB.
Graphics card has 2GB VRAM.

The laptop temperature depends on what game i'm playing, in Dirt Showdown it's approximately 90'C and in Live For Speed it's about 75'C when using integrated graphics. Too hot maybe?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers! :)

I would suggest you update the NVIDIA drivers as you haven't used it on a regular basis. For the heat, I would clean out your CPU fan intake. It seems there may be constricted air flow. 90Celsius translates to ~200 F. My desktop never gets that hot. Make sure you don't block the intake with your lap or any other object.

Hope that helped,

Chris
