Overclock even if I don't utilize the CPU?

I have my i7-3770k overclocked to 4.2GHz using the OC-Genie on my GD65. If I rarely utilize more than 25% of the CPU, should I just use the regular 3.5GHz?

Is the higher frequency of the overclock only utilized when the CPU is maxed out, or does it improve speed regardless of the CPU utilization?

I would like my system to last as long as possible, so basically, if i don't max out the CPU, OC or no OC?

Thanks.

The overclock only boosts performance when your cpu is under heavy load, so if you never are in that situation, keeping it at stock would let you cool it easier and less power consumption.
What are you using your system for? Right now, I can say for 90% of the tasks you can do, you won't see a benefit from overclocking. The 3770K is very quick at stock speeds. Also, an OC means more heat. You will likely experience the room that the PC is operating in to be noticeably hotter. Consult my profile picture :p

If you don't need it, no point of OCing. What do you use your pc for?

Overclocking theoretically shortens the lifespan, but the cpu would be obsolete before the OC has any effects on the lifespan

Btw the cpu underclocks itself when its in idle

Thanks so much to all of you. I do some gaming but to video rendering or anything intensive like that. I was just wondering if the OC would change speeds when not under load. And since it doesn't, I'll stop doing it!
