Graphics card AND tuner?

Dumb question time...

I want to build a HTPC/PVR and plan on using the Hauppauge 1229 tuner card. Many years ago (if my faulty memory serves me correctly) I had a tuner card that was also a graphics card. I assume this is not the case with this one? That I need both a tuner and a graphics card? If so, what would be a good card with HD capability?

Thanks much!

There are no system specs at the moment, since this will be a new build. Do your concerns still apply for a new build?

Yes, that's what it was... the All in Wonder.

jnkweaver, do you mean the internal video driver on the motherboard? I'm going to need an HDMI port, though, right? Or do motherboards come with those now?

The card I am using is an old tuner card I had. It is not an all in one so I still use my graphics card for output. I was just saying if the whole purpose of the machine is a dvr then the integrated graphics chips is the way to go. Then you have to purchase a mb that supports it which usually outputs in HDMI.

While I agree that the integrated graphics on most modern CPUs/APUs are sufficient for HD playback, it doesn't make sense to me to replace the motherboard (and CPU?? and Memory?? and OS??) when adding a low end graphics card to the existing system will do the same at probably a much lower cost.

@Storypage - If you could list your current system specifications, it could be that an HD6450/GT620 is all you need.

Yes, I want to use it as a DVR/HTPC, so I will look for a motherboard with HDMI outputs. I'll be ripping my DVD library, converting old VHS tapes of family stuff, and recording over the air television. When I get it up and running, the rest of my remaining Dish package ($45 a month) will go bye bye. I'm not really a gamer.

Any recommendations for a good motherboard at a good price to fit this purpose?

My bad. I thought this was an older, existing build. No, my concerns about costs are no longer valid. Either an AMD APU or Ivy Bridge Pentium processor is going to be enough for your DVR needs. Ripping DVDs and converting old VHS tapes however, are likely to be a bit more CPU and RAM intensive.

Actually, here's a complete HTPC build I created awhile back which includes the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250:
