Do I need to re-do my heatsink install?

So after struggling to get my Noctua NH-D14 onto the motherboard, I need your advice as to whether you think I need to re-do it.

I couldn't get the screws lined up so I was having trouble getting them on evenly.....one side would go on but I turned it too many times. Then I'd get the other side on....same problem.

At least 30-40 minutes later.....finally got it on. I know for a fact that it was rocking back and forth.....I also know for a fact that in my frustration I picked it up off the setting to try and replace it on the screws.

In an effort to prevent the number of screwdriver rage marks in my work bench....do you think it's okay to just fire it up and see how the temps are? Or will I be committing a mortal sin of CPU installation?

I have a feeling I already know your answer, even though I'm not really sure it's possible to install a heatsink without that happening to a certain extent.....at least every time I build a new comp I go through the same bullsh!t struggle....

Part of the reason I'm writing this is because my fingers need a break and so does my temper....

But your thoughts would be appreciated!

Solution
I would consider the first installation practice and redo it. I would do it again now while your hands are still dirty so as to avoid the large exhale when your temps start rising...

Well that's not really my question....but 2011. I understand how it's supposed to mount on the brackets provided by Noctua....and I did successfully install it. I'm just asking if I need to redo the thermal paste and re-install it because it rocked back and forth/picked it up etc.

Thanks.

The paste will sit/spread once you heat it up anyway, so there shouldn't be a problem unless you really put some air bubbles between the sink/cpu. I guess it would depend on just how much you rocked it/picked it up...

Yeah I think you're right. Was just getting my shoes on..... Le Sigh. If nothing else it is certainly a test of my patience.

Thank you!

Well I picked up the supplies to clean it, had some food, watched a movie. Went back at it knowing it'd be tough but I'd have the patience to do it and it went as well as I could hope. Now to put the fans back on it and place the motherboard in the case.

I really appreciate your help! Sometimes you just need a little nudge in the right direction!

Also, I'm not so sure about those old Pentiums and the mounting they use, but you shouldn't have to unload the whole mobo from the case. You should be able to simply unseat the heatsink/fan via the (usually) 4 screws that hold it to the mobo. Anyway, like I said, let us know the results.

Edit: wrong post about the Pentium lol
