The internet provider I'm going through uses vdsl, which has made it hard to find a modem by itself to actually buy that supports vdsl. As of right now I am leasing through them and they gave me the typical modem/router combo. The computer I have hardwired to the modem is getting 50 mb download and 30 mb upload speed. My laptop on average gets anywhere between 22-25 download and 30 upload when using wifi.

My question is, is there anywhere to increase the download speed of my wifi? I know usually modem/router combos aren't the best quality, but I can't seem to find a modem itself that supports vdsl.

However I was wondering about just buying a high end router to hardwire to the modem/router combo and seeing if that will increase the wifi download speed. Is that realistic? or would i be wasting my money?

To be honest buying a dedicated wireless router sounds like your best solution.
Since you are achieving your advertised speeds while wired, wiring into a dedicated wireless router, disabling the Modem's wireless radio and DHCP/Router, you should be able to achieve better WiFi with a better wireless router.
As far as looking for modems, your ISPs modem is normally thoroughly tested compared to a third party modem which usually always has one issue or another.
Gateways as a general rule are crammed and share CPU/memory, thus do not perform as well.

Any reason you can't/don't get Cable?
