Hi,

I got a samsung laptop series 7 chronos (770Z5E-S01DE) this April. I've played a couple of games, some demanding like bioshock infinite, but never really pushed it to the limit. I don't know what is the reason, but as time goes by, it's getting slower right after startup. I do weekly virus scans, and optimize hard drives and I just don't know why it's running slow. I know chronos is not the fastest laptop out there but I've used a low-end quad core cpu with 8gigs of RAM desktop 3 years ago. It seems to be slower than the desktop I used before. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Laptop processors much weaker than their desktop counterparts. That is one of the biggest misconception of people who see i5s and i7s on laptops and assume they are equivalent to their desktop brothers. The laptop proc in the notebook might be 4 cores with 8 threads, but the single threaded performance is anemic compared to desktop i5 and i7. Second of all, your GPU (8870M) is approximately equivalent in performance to the HD 7770 in desktop which isn't high end. Secondly, it has SLOW DDR3 memory which will have a impact on gaming peformance.

BTW do you have benchmarks or numbers for us to go by? That would be helpful.

What are the specs of the desktop?

I have a friend who has a i7 2620QM on his laptop. I have a 3570K which I originally started at (stock). When I tested my rig with a HD 7750 (as a test) against his laptop with a GTX 570M, I was able to score better on CPU intensive games such as Battlefield 3. Also, during a FPS test with PCSX2 running Final Fantasy XII, I was able to get a consistantly higher FPS than he does. Emulation of PS2 is very CPU intensive, so to find my desktop i5 beat an mobile i7. And if you look at threads dealing with topic, the general consensus is that laptop CPU are less powerful than their desktop cousins. If Laptop procs are really more powerful, why do you think people still use desktops?

Well that link you showed me showed the aggregate score for the i7 3630QM as being on par with the i5 3570K, despite having more threads. Also, no laptop procs can overclock as much as desktop ones can, so my 3570K will still be more powerful than an i7 laptop. I am mostly a gamer, so it will matter for more me this way. Besides, you ignore the price deltas of laptops. Anyways, we can flame another time. It is baffling that intel would charge different prices for different CPU. why don't they just make 45W Ivy bridge CPU for both laptops AND Desktops if you so claim these laptop parts are more powerful than desktop parts. Anyways, He would be fine with his laptop

I would suggest these steps:

Do you have a SSD?
If not, get one
Did you re install windows?
Did you clean the interior of your laptop for dust (these can be very harmful)
Try freeing up disk space, as more usage of disk affects performance.

Hope this helps!

Check your cooling vents for dust and fine debris; mine also does this major throttling, too, if I don't blast its exhaust vents out once every month with compressed air, which can be bought @ any computer or BigBox store! I also turn on the vacuum and let the nozzle catch the debris as it flies free! Because this laptop Rules! But only if it can breathe properly! :)
