There will be two parts to my problem so if you could analyze both issues and fix both, that would be great.

1. My friend has a pretty good internet connection overall. I have known others who use the same provider and such and receive good wireless connection. His parents and directly connected to the router but he uses a wireless internet connection for his desktop (He had this problem with his laptop beforehand as well).

Every time I'm over or just in general he has AWFUL connection. He disconnects from Skype and League of Legends constantly, but he always has good ping when he doesn't. It doesn't have to do with his parents being on the internet or anyone else. He doesn't know how it happens and neither do I. He isn't even terribly far away from the house's router.

He would like to know what the problem could be and if there would be any way to fix it.

2. In my house I am directly connected to the internet but my family and I use the wireless internet plenty. I have Roadrunner as my isp and I had no troubles with it in the past. Although like a year ago it seemed like the internet got a bit worse.

My ping in-game has gotten drastically higher but the xbox connection seems to have improved. This problem also has nothing to do with multiple people being on the internet. My parent's mac is literally right above me on the next floor, yet it constantly has awful internet connection and they can barely even use it and wait 5-10 minutes for one page to load on the browser. The iPad also has this problem 2 floors up in my bedroom (I'm in the basement). It never is as bad as the mac, not even close. Like if im watching a Twitch stream it will just stop streaming and I can never get it to work again (sometimes I just move it to a different spot in my room).

Our internet connection used to be perfect. The router has always been in the basement and we used to run purely on just laptops.

I would like to know what the problem is and how I could fix it.

Thank you for reading this and giving me a response. It has been troubling me as I have no clue on wireless internet, I'm more of a computer technical related guy. I know it is a lot to read through but I really would like this to be fixed.

Thank you,
Michael

Please ensure you have your router communicating on a non congested wireless channel. You can go to the Google Play store and search for the Amped Wireless Wifi Analytics tool>download it>it will tell you the least congested channels to use as well as other tools.

You may also download the program called InSSIDer if you have a windows based laptop and it will also scan networks and provide the congestion data as well.

From there you would go to the following Router Control Panel area (general example-yours may vary):
More Settings>2.4Ghz Settings>Basic Settings>Select the channel that is the least congested>Apply
Do the same for the 5Ghz band as well.

What exactly are channels? We have our own connection that we connect to. I can rename it and change the security settings and such. Is that what it is? Or is it something different?

Also how would I download an app from the google play store to my computer?

It's different... think of them like streets and you wanna drive on one that's not congested.

You would use InSSIDer for your PC then. Download that and it will tell you what channels are in use, sig str., etc. From there you can make your reconfiguration of your network.

BTW what router do you have?

That would work for my friend, although I have a desktop. The only things that run on Wi-Fi in my house are a Mac and an iPad. =/

It's a fairly new Motorola router, no more than a year old.

My friend's is a Linksys router by Cisco, in the same condition.
