How to back up my files without getting the virus?

Hi, my computer was infected by $RECYCLER virus. My Anti Virus (NOrton 2013) seems to be friend with the virus. I want to reformat my computer but I have important files on it. How can I back up these files without the virus?

While running anti-virus that can detect the virus, copy all the files you need to an external HDD.
Rebuild your PC / Re-install OS.
Install latest AntiVirus (that works, ideally not Norton as after 2005 it went downhill fast).
Using latest AV signatures on a fresh OS scan your external HDD just to be sure.

Copy the files back.


If you're not comfortable doing this, get a pro to do it, and make sure they do a job 'at least better' than the above.
