Overheating issue with Sapphire HD 7870

I got a Sapphire HD 7870 OC GHZ edition yesterday, before that I had a gt 220. Since yesterday, my PC has started to crash whilst I was playing demanding games. I ran Fur Mark and found out that my PC was crashing when my graphics card got to 56 degrees. I changed the drivers for older versions and that pushed it up to 75 degrees. Is there any fix for this because I have read that it should cut out at around 100? Thanks.

The psu is not going to cause heat issues unless the psu itself gets hot. However, under load, that psu may have issues and could very well shut down your system.

You are going to need a minimum of 500w, but it MUST be a well built supply. Your 7870 requires two 6 pin pegs, and may pull as much as 225w by itself. You won't find a decent supply for less than about £50-60. I would suggest you up your budget to that area and look at THIS (made by Seasonic) or THIS.

Never skimp on a psu - if it blows, it could very easily take your m/b, cpu and gpu along with it.

Couple of things to consider:

Did you COMPLETELY uninstall the nvidia drivers? You need to use driver sweeper and/or ccleaner to get rid of all the tail end crud left behind. Also use them when you change versions.

You may have an airflow issue with the new card. The 7870 is substantially larger than the 220 and together with the PEG connectors, it may be restricting airflow through your case.

What psu are you using?

I have an alpine 750w psu. I do not think that it is drivers but I will be sure to uninstall them later. When I run battlefield 3 at low, it is fine, the higher I have the settings, the longer I can run it for. The sprint lag out then my px reboots.
In terms of airflow, I am getting a new case on Monday or tuesday so I will update you then. I am planning on performing the classic paperclip test with the psu later.
Many thanks.

Update, I deleted all the old nvidia drivers and nothing happened. I ran FurMark and had a close look at when the computer crashed, it was when the card was around 79C and when the fans jumped from below 85% to above.

This has led me to believe that the source of the problem is the PSU, which one would you recommend, bearing in mind I have about a £30 budget.

Thank you very much, I have just ordered the XFX because my mobo requires a 4 pin connector as well as a 24 pin. From what I have read, the XFX has a 4+4 pin connector. I have read this is what I require, is this correct? All I have now is a 3 to 18 day wait.
