Graphics Card Fan getting hot

After putting in a new graphics card (gtx 550ti) into my pc it seemed to get very hot to the point where i could smell burning so i stopped using it and i thought this was mainly down to poor airflow and a small case size.

I have now bought a new, much bigger case but i am still having issues where it is hitting temperatures of around 70c while playing games such as Battlefield 3.

Yesterday it got very hot again and so i stopped playing games and let it cool down and when i turned it off i thought i would feel how hot it was and check it was OK and just before turning it off i checked the temperature which was 37c. When i felt the card it wasn't hot but the actual centre of the fan was very hot although i did have the fan on full speed. It still seems weird that the thing designed to cool the card is actually the cause of the heat.

Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening?

I was reluctant to take the fan apart mainly due to the awkwardness of doing it but i took it off and sprayed a bit of WD40 into it and i think it spins a little more smoother now which is good. I've messed around with the settings of the fan so that it isn't under as much stress and although it hit similar temperatures, if not slightly higher i couldn't smell burning after 20 or so mins of playing battlefield.

I will keep messing around with the fan's settings so I can try to get cooler temperatures but no doubt i will still be a little paranoid about it because the last thing i want is a fire.

I think i need to look at getting a new PSU and motherboard so i can connect up all the fans which i have nowhere to plug in. Then i should have a better airflow and my GPU won't be so dependent on it's fan for cooling.

If i have further issues I will make sure i take the fan apart fully and oil it properly but it has seemed to help with my attempt at oiling it already.

Thanks for the advice!
