Hi toms hardware - I'm having major problems with a friends Dell Inspiron 620. It had a 250W PSU, I installed a 7750 & new wireless card but the PSU started smoking when it was on... I then ditched the power supply, went to curry's and bought a Corsair CX430W. The power supply works fine - but now the PC fans start to run for about 5 seconds then turn off again. The PC then keeps on turning on and off every couple of seconds. I'm worried that I may have fried all his components when the 250W started smoking, odviously this would be very bad. The i3 is what I'm concerned about - the other components are pretty worthless.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Now - I just got back to my house - tested the 7750 and it appears to be working, this has led me to believe that the components aren't fried, as the graphics card was powered, and the fan was spinning when the old 250W PSU began to smoke.

Other Specs:
i3-2120
Generic Dell Motherboard (May be root of the problem?)
Seagate Barracuda 500gb

I am thinking the motherboard could have short circuited, is it normal for them to make the CPU blow as well? Or did this only happen in older PC's

Looks like he'll have to get a new motherboard, and probably case at that. (Does anyone know whether Inspiron 620 cases fit mATX motherboards? Thanks

Probably its not motherboard problem. Fans working for 5 secs and then stop looks like a short circuit. Some component is probably touching the case, take everything off and test outside the case to be sure

I second this. Pull all parts out, inspect motherboard capacitors, are they appears to be normal in size and shape, and start putting parts back, make sure that you plug all power connectors well including 4 pin to motherboard.

I've sorted it - a power lane on the back of the motherboard had been burnt - so the motherboard has now been replaced by this motherboard:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-XKT-1155-Z68AP-D3-Motherboard-Rev/dp/B0054X4I4M/ref=sr_1_71?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1373311909&sr=1-71&keywords=lga+1155+motherboard

and this case:

The Corsair PSU works perfectly fine though. After checking the i3 it also looks fine as well.

Many thanks for your help!
