I've been offered 2 very good conditioned used graphics cards: An hd 6850 for 80 and an hd 7870 2gb for 150. I planning on getting this in the next few days. I'm upgrading from my hd 6670 I just sold for 60 AND trying to watch my budget. Which one should i get?

The Rest of my system:
AMD Athlon II x4 610e cpu
2x2gb ddr3-1333mhz ram
250gb 7200rpm hdd
MSI 760gm-e51(FX) micro-atx mobo
standard dvd burner
antec 100 gaming mid-tower case
My main screen is 1080x1920 21.5" Monitor and my secondary monitor is a 900x1366 17" Monitor

More about : offered 6850

depends on the rest of your system. the 7870 is by far a better card.

The HD 7870 is better get that instead - it's a good deal for the 7870. Get that instead. The 6850 is overpriced.

The 6850 is slightly faster than the 7770, which draws much less power. The cheapest 7770s at retail are around $90. So a used 6850 at $80 is not a particularly good deal IMO.

The cheapest 7870 at retail are around $200, so $150 for a used one is decent.

I agree with swifty_morgan that the rest of the system matters (along with the performance you require), but the 7870 looks like a better deal.

So, I have to ask, how are the rest of your system? Do you have at least a Core i3 / Phenom II X4/X6 o game with? If not, maybe you should opt for the 6850 and ask him to lower his price ( you can bargain ) and put the extra towards a new CPU upgrade. This way, you get way better performance and you removed some of the CPU bottleneck. Hope this helps!

As Sakkura said, the 6850 is slightly faster than the 7770 which goes for 90$ and draws less power. So basically a used 6850 for 80$ dollars is not a good deal in my opinion. However the 7870 for 150 dollars sounds like a fair deal. at that price point you get a 650 ti boost which is roughly as good as a 7850 performance wise. Get the 7870 as you will have a hard time finding one at that price point again. you wont be disappointed :)

The OP did not give us his resolution yet; If we know what he's resolution is, there is no way to tell if 1GB is enough for him.

I really hate when people post questions and don't come back to fill in the blanks until 2 days later.

I see you can put a significant cpu on that board with the right BIOS. If you have plans for that, get the bigger card. otherwise get the 6850 because your cpu can't fully utilize the power of the other.

you also didn't mention monitor/resolution. that also plays a significant part in buying the right card. That's why we ask questions and hope people supply all the necessary data.
