GTX 770 Temp Questions.

Hi all, I'm running an EVGA GTX 770 Superclocked GPU (The black blower cooler not ACX).

I was monitoring temps and it seems like the card purposefully tries to get to 79c and stay there.

I downloaded EVGA Precision and the default setting was also target temp of 79c. It seems like GPU boost is overclocking the GPU till the card hits 79c.

My questions are:

1. Is 79-80c safe? Will this hurt my cards lifespan?

2. Is there anything I can do to keep GPU Boost from overclocking into the 1200mhz range? I'm getting more than 60 FPS so i'm hoping this isn't killing my card by overclocking it so high when my FPS is plenty high to not even need clock speed so high.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Totally safe. Its best to set the temperature target to 94C and tick prioritize, because the card will needlessly throttle to stay below 80C, which is stupid because it should just speed up the fan to dissipate the heat, rather than slow the card to generate less heat. Anything under 90C is fine.

I see.

Well I have just learned that GPU boost 2.0 will lower clock speeds if it goes above 80c.

I'm just hoping that not going with the ACX cooling and being at 79c is not going to mean this card will have a lower lifespan due to the higher temps when I play for so many hours.

Will that cause this GPU to die faster than a 70c GPU? Or does it not really matter until temps get higher?
