I plan on transferring my i7 2600k processor from one MOBO to another.

Would I have to worry about anything in particular while doing this procedure? I suspect that thermal paste might make it difficult to get my (stock) heat-sink off of my mobo.

I've had this PC setup and built since 2011 so I take it the paste is wearing off.

When doing this, what kind of difficult can I expect?

Hi,

First off the mobo is same socket for the CPU and memory.

About the thermal past, you will need to buy some because you need to reapply.

What you need to do is clean off the old thermal paste from cpu and heatsink with rubbing alcohol.

Their are many theories about how to reapply thermal paste, you can go on youtube, they are many tutorials about that.

Personally with applying it in cross in the middle of the cpu, on some test it looks like it spread better that way.

Makes sense. When removing the heatsink from the Mobo, do I simply just remove it or would there be any difficulty taking it off because of the thermal paste?

Once you have released the bracket/holddowns, you might have to gently twist it to loosen the thermal compound-especially if you installed a stock cooler using the stock thermal compound that usually comes on them.
