I'm in a pickle and I've got no clue what to do. I'm attempting to install a Samsung 840 Series SSD on a Gigabyte M68MT-S2 Motherboard which, apparently doesn't support AHCI.

Looking for the best course of action to get what I've got up and running today, I plan on installing Win-7 64, Photoshop and several games on the drive, just about everything else will run on a 500 GB HDD. I'd like to keep the drive operating efficiently and smoothly until I can afford a new MoBo. Thanks!

Yes, that is the one and I recommend to this: Sean's Windows 7 Install & Optimization Guide for SSDs & HDDs ( read the 2nd part--Optimization Guide ).

IDE mode: Old, slower, it is simply a compatibility mode.
RAID mode has all the advantages of AHCI mode. You can use single driver or multi driver.

Also if you use the Samsung Magician software, then you need use the NVIDIA driver for AMD chipsets MB. Here is the release notes. Check it for more info. http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads/Samsung_Magician_40_Release_Notes_10.pdf

I don't have the 840 series SSD, I had other PC used one SSD that works fine...

you can install it without support, ahci isnt needed only recommended

it will just use the ide driver. have you checked bios or to see if there is an update? if its in there activate it otherwise leave it and it will do no harm it will just be a little slower

i recommend if you have the disk without sp1 on it you download the new version from msdn (cant remember link sorry)

you will then need to input your key from on your win7 disk. i did it and it speeds up the install immensely as you no longer need to install about a 1000 updates

Just updated BIOS (that was a pain in the ass) to newest version which is over a year old and no dice. Is there anything I need to do in the BIOS or setup if I'm not using AHCI?

I'll try to find a way to get the SP1 version of Win 7 64 onto a disc; really good tip, there's nothing worse than having to update and restart after a new install!

EDIT: Are these the links you're talking about?

From the manual, p26, I see you can use the NV sata raid mode, and AHCI is a subset of raid. When you install win7 you need install the "NVIDIA MCP61/MCP68 SATA RAID Driver", you download the RAID driver from GA website into the USB drive first. Here is how to install driver. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/68505-sata-driver-load-windows-7-vista-setup.html
In the link it is for SATA driver but here you need install the raid driver, after that you don't configure RAID. Just connect the SSD + DVD, but not the regular 500GB HD, you can connect it after install the SSD, also you need tweak the SSD. You can Google it for how to.

no, dont install the raid driver you dont need it, if your motherboard doesnt natively support it there is no point installing it.

you don't need to change any settings to get it to load, just plug it in and away you go

this links to where i got mine from

Awesome, I've now got an Disc w/ SP1; Fantastic idea, that'll save me a bit of a headache thank you both for the help on that.

So, best course of action then is unplug the HDD, Plug In the SSD and just do a basic install of my OS; no trash management or anything to worry about? I believe the Motherboard has Raid support but it's something I need to enable in BIOS (not exactly sure of what's available without looking, but I know it's there). I'm somewhat confused between Cin & Shanky's recommendations.

I'm also unsure of what you mean by "Tweak the SSD" is the article at the link below relevant?

I don't have the 840 series SSD, I had other PC used one SSD that works fine under either IDE or RAID mode because that PC doesn't have the AHCI mode ( NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI).
