vsftpd working in ubuntu desktop but not in ubuntu server?

I wanted to set up a ftp server for home use on my laptop, but when i try to connect to the server I get "no route to host" error. I have ubuntu server and ubuntu desktop on the same computer and vsftpd seems to only work on the desktop version. I also have the same settings in the vsftpd.conf files on the server and desktop. I'm a newbe with networking. Thanks.

"No route to the host" means you have some problem with network configuration, not on FTPD level. So, check TCP/IP configuration in both "desktop" and "server" Ubuntu's (commmand for that is "ifconfig", and you might have to type it as "sudo ifconfig").

Well It turns out I have to ping to the IP of the computer that I want to connect to the server with, so is it possible to set up a .sh file that will ping to the router at boot or can I fix it a different way?
