Hey! my friend jack is getting a new gpu for his old store bought PC, only, there are 2 problems. Firstly, his case is super narrow (about 4") and secondly, he has a mere 220w PSU. We've looked at some main candidates so far.

Nvidia Geforce GT 610
Nvidia Geforce GT 620
Radeon HD 6570
Radeon HD 6450

Obviously the Radeon HD 6570 will perform the best of the bunch, but, it says it needs a minimum of a 400w PSU. Would it run on a 220w? or should we go lower and get the GT610 which says it needs a 300w PSU. I mean, he's not doing very demanding things, he's playing Minecraft, Cube World, TF2, Gmod, Terreria, and some GTA. What do you think, any other suggestions? Thank you very very much!

Buying a new PSU is pretty much out of the question, I mean possibly yeah, but probably not likely. This is a calculator showing what recommended PSU is, it says that minimum is 187w. I still think it would be allright, but I'm a bit 'eh

Would a new PSU be out of the question? :s

If you stress the PSU too much, it might throw random, inexplicable errors, or worse, fry the rest of the internals. More so because the PSU that came with the store bought computer is probably not a quality one.

I would suggest to buy a new PSU and reuse it when the time comes to upgrade/build a newer PC.

If it was a quality PSU, I wouldn't have any problem recommending you to run it at 187w, but since I can probably confirm it isn't, I really wouldn't suggest you to do it.
Even the Extreme Outervision page you referred to said that the recommended PSU wattage was ~235W (minimum + 25%). And I must agree with them, because running a PSU which isn't known for it's quality at its maximum isn't recommended at all (system instability, random errors/freezes, frying other interals, etc.)

Try calculating it with other websites, and if they all say it should be OK, then by all means, go for it:
http://support.asus.com/powersupply.aspx
http://ca.msi.com/service/power-supply-calculator/

Like I mentioned earlier, Quality PSUs can be reused many, many times before needing to be replaced, so he will be able to transfer it to his next build.

I literally answered at least 7 posts today stressing, along with some fellow forum members, the importance of a quality PSU.

So that's my humble two cents. Let us know what you decide!
