I have been searching the forums because I am experiencing a very common issue related to my Radeon 6850 graphics card but I can't find a post that has a solution.

I was hoping to get some help. What is happening is that randomly my screen will switch sides. If you imagine drawing a line down the center of the screen, to make two sides. Then take the right side and put it on the left, and the left on the right. Also, every so often the screen with get thin horizontal lines the distort the image. I have the newest drivers and it also is not a monitor issue as I have tried it on many different monitors with many different types of cables. (HDMI, VGA, DVI)

Does any one have experience with this issue and better yet a solution? :) I just want to play games in peace....

For additional reference, I have added a link to a post that has the same issue as me but as far as I can tell there has been no solution.

Yea, I have had the computer for about 3 years now and it has only started happening in the last year or so. It has me really stump. The worst part is that I can't really play anything on my gaming computer now. THe only way to make it go away is to restart it, which becomes very disruptive when playing a game. Nothing like the screen switching sides when you are in the middle of an epic battle. lol

Do you have the latest 6850 drivers for your OS? If not, download it here. I do remember experiencing that with older drivers. but I believe the issue went away. I sold my 6850 for $80 and bought a 7790 for $90, Decent upgrade at 1080P.

Update:Sorry just read, you do have the latest drivers. My only recommendation then is trying to under clock it and see if it goes away, could be a heat issue. or it could just be damaged, may want to check the warranty.

What brand is this card? if it was XFX with the lifetime warranty, i'd say to get it replaced.

It's probably too late for that now though. IF worst comes to worst, you might have to replace your card.
or, it could be something else...

I am in the process of re-installing my driver, and I will let you know how that goes.

In regards to underclocking, I will be honest, I not really sure how to do this. I have very little know how when it comes to working on the graphic capabilities of a computer. I understand the basics, such as having the proper power supply, RAM, adequate cooling, etc... but I don't do any customization to the graphics. All I do is install the card and keep the drivers up to date. However, it is something I would really like to know how to do. Do you have a good place I could read up on under clocking at?

The brand is PowerColor and my computer is no longer under warranty. I bought the computer from CyberPower PC, so I doubt the graphics card manufacturer would honor any type of warranty.

Really simple, no guide needed, I recommend downloading and installing sapphire Trixx(Linky), it will work with your card even though you are using a powercooler card. I recommend Trixx as its user interface is super easy and uncluttered. Install it and open it up, then set the core and memory clock settings lower, say by 50-100 MHz. You could also try messing with the voltage(reduce it a bit). Maybe your card is overheating during gaming, or maybe the GDDR5 chips aren't being sufficiently cooled and when taxed its switching out locations. Or maybe its just windows being windows.

Like I said earlier, a 7790 is a comparable card for specs, 7850 is far superior, above 6950 GPU performance. So you may consider just ebaying the card as well as it is out of warranty and with a little extra cash buy a 7790+ or the new Geforce 760. When you OC your gpu, Its an easy way to get 10%+ performance for free. Also the new 7000 series radeons overclock to max with no voltage adjust, i haven't seen a card yet that doesn't hit at least 1100 MHZ on the core clock.

Well, it has been two days now since I uninstalled and re-installed my graphics card and the issue has not occurred again since then. This is the longest I have gone on my computer without seeing it since the problem started. I think that it might have been a driver issue after all. Instead of using the device manager to install the updates, I did it directly from AMD's website. I am currently on Driver Version: 12.104.0.0 which was released on 03/28/2013. I would suggest upgrading your card to this version if you come across this error yourself. A link to the drivers page of AMD's website is provided below:

Thank you for everyone that responded, I really appreciate the help.

Congrats on getting it working, yeah you can get the latest beta drivers straight from AMD, microsoft usually selects an old WDDM driver from the device manager, it works, but definitely isn't optimized.

Now that you have a working GPU, you should definitely give it an overclock, and get yourself a free performance boost, you may even be able to the lower the voltage and as you give it a slight OC, thus getting more performance and a cooler running card. Don't be too bashful, just do small increments up and play your games to check on stability. You start seeing weird textures, or it freezes, or the Graphics driver crashes, then you know its unstable at those settings, nothing a reboot can't fix(if its a hard lock).
