I'm looking to upgrade my system over the next few months and would like to do it stages. My current setup is:

Phenom II X4 945
ASUS M2N-SLI mobo
4GB ddr2 800 ram
750W Cooler Master PSU
x2 GTX 560ti in SLI

My rig, obviously, is starting to suffer with more modern titles.

From what I can tell/gather my phenom is still a fairly decent cpu for gaming. I can get a AM3+ mobo and some DDR3 ram and then drop that phenom into the board.

I'll eventually upgrade to an FX-6350 or 8350, but I can do the mobo/ram upgrade fairly immediately and it would be a step in the right direction. I'm looking at the 990fx chipset for sure, maybe the ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX.

Can anyone ballpark what kind of performance gains I could expect to see from just a mobo/ram upgrade?

Phenom II x4 CPUs that end with number 5 can be used on both AM2+, AM3 and AM3+ motherboards. Versions that end with 0, like Phenom II x4 940 can only be used on an AM2+ board due to its lack of an integrated ddr3 memory controller.

Thanks buddy - that helped me a lot!

Then I can recommend the MSI 970A-G46 - I use that with a AMD Phenom II X6 1045T.
This one does a decent overclock and it is with DDR3 and it has both SLI and Crossfire.
