Which Brand To Choose For SSD

I'm currently shopping around for an SSD. I'd prefer a 256GB, mainly because I was looking to do more than just dedicate it to my OS (installing programs/games as well).

It seems that the Samsung Pro 840 series is really popular, but I'm not really familiar with enough brands to know if it's worth the price, or is it just the name that's making it so expensive.

This is my first time shopping for an SSD, and I really want to make an extreme upgrade in term of writing speeds and such, because my HDD is giving me a headache.

Does anyone know of other brands that can beat or compete at around the same specs as the Samsung Pro 840 series?

Samsung drives are pretty popular now, and either of their current offerings are easy recommendations. Which one to go for depends on what you need, the only real difference between the 840 Pro and vanilla 840 is Write speeds.
If Write speeds are what your after, might also be worth looking into the OCZ Vector.

Samsung are a NAND Flash manufacturer, as such they can keep all the best binned flash for themselves. The design of the drive, the controller and all that are designed in-house by Samsung as well, its an entirely Samsung creation. SSD companies doing as much as they can themselves now is an increasing trend, I think they all get pretty fed up of waiting on another company to do their job back in the Sandforce days, while guys...

I don't own a Samsung SSD, I have a Crucial M4, but, I have heard nothing but praise from friends who have Samsung SSD's. I have also heard, not 100% sure about it, that Samsung SSD's are all in house made, and all the parts are made by Samsung. A lot of people recommend Samsung, I would also recommend Crucial, but I am more inclined towards Samsung, grabbed the M4 because I found it on sale.

Yeah, that's really what I'm shooting for overall: is the sale. If I can find that the sale beats the Samsung for the same specifications and performance; I'd go for it. I've heard a bit about Crucial and OCZ, but there's just so much and SSDs are expensive too.

+1 to manofchalk - both drives are excellent options. The 840 Pro does actually outperform in the 840 in 4K random read performance, 4K random write performance and sequential writes (sequential writes by the largest margin). It's just sequential reads where the 840 manages to keep up. The OCZ Vector, Sandisk Extreme II and Seagate 600 all deliver performance close to that of the 840 Pro, though the OCZ is actually quite a bit more expensive despite being slower on average.

For something cost-effective I'd highly recommend the Plextor M5S. The Sandisk Ultra Plus is another very strong option, and the 840 also. The 840 Pro (much like the GTX770 in the GPU world) is excellent value by high-end standards (being cheaper than drives it's actually faster than - it's number 1 for performance but cheaper than the 2nd best, 3rd best, 4th best etc...) but the Plextor M5S, normal 840 and Sandisk Ultra Plus are better value overall.
