Samsung says that the data migration software that comes with their Pro SSD drives, mine is the 512GB 840 Pro, will allow me to simply restore my HDD-based Windows 7 Ultimate boot drive to an SSD without having to do a new install of the OS and reinstalling all of my apps. I am skeptical that this will actually work. Anyone have any experience with this or any information?

Thanks,
Tom

I had a terrible experience with those hard drives and so have many others on amazon. I wrote a review on there I had 2 Samsung 840 pro drives die on me within 3 days so I gave up and went back to crucial and have zero problems. I also tried that software of theres it did work well but both drives died on me within 3 days. Be aware of what you are buying its a pain to keep swapping out drives because they fail. I would get the crucial M500 its what im using now and has been rock solid for over a month.

I've been using the Samsung 840 for 2 weeks now with absolutely no problems, and from what I've seen most Samsung SSDs are very reliable. Sounds like you were a bit unlucky.

Yea maybe we got a bad batch, when I see way I mean my roommate also we ordered our drives at the same time to save on shipping and his was DOA mine lasted 3 days. Amazon sent us new drives and both lasted 3 days and died again. So I went with crucial and he went with patriot so far so good. Keeping fingers crossed =)

I'm using 840 Pro for some months without any problem. The software works fine with some limitations, like only 2 partions etc.
But if your system is a little older it might be better to do a fresh start, which helps to increase boot a lot.

I installed my 512GB 840 Pro in March. There were no problems until yesterday when on boot my system booted to another hard drive. I thought the SSD had a problem so I tried to restore te previous days Ghost backup. But Ghost couldn't find the drive, even though Windows Explorer sees it and I am able to move data off of the drive to another drive. Unplugging the other drive resulted in the system telling me there was no bootable drive installed. The drive that was booting was one that came with the system when I bought it and I had left it installed, so when BIOS couldn't find a bootable SSD it went and found the bootable HDD. Because I need my PC for work to do I reinsialled Office and other programs on the HDD and move My Coduments, Pictures, and Office documents, etc, from the SDD to the proper folders on the HDD, and now I have a PC that runs.

But, I don't have an SSD and I got used to the fast boots and backups (15 second boot, 10 minute backup) and they're now 2 minute boots and 45 minute backups. SO my next move is to contact Samsung. If they refuse to help then I'll just have to buy a new one, at $500 a pop that gets expensive.

I've had my 840 Pro since December 2012 and its performance has been consistent, even when filling up to 98%. I know that another review site had a firmware problem with their early samples, but mine's been flawless, and recently updated to the latest firmware.
